India and Indians learnt a very important lesson from the Paris Olympics 2024. This lesson came about with the sad disqualification of a woman wrestler due to being overweight by 100 grams in her Women Wrestling 50 kg Category final. This story is etched in the minds of Indians who follow sports on a daily basis.
What was this lesson ? Indians came to realize that sometimes making representations at the highest levels just do not work in international and in competitive sports. How can you disqualify a wrestler for being 100 grams over weight in her category, even though she was not drinking water, having food and had even cut off her hair ?
Of course, sports is not just about medals. The very fact that one has prepared, kept oneself fit and well, looked after the body and the mind, and competed with the best in the world, without fear or favour. That itself is the Medal. A medal that life gives everyone of us.
But a medal would be nice if one competes on the biggest stage for India.
A medal is also a reflection and validation that a nation has the necessary processes, infrastructure, systems and talent in place to aim for the best, at the important stages on which sports is played. And of course, the fans are happy.
