Disability in India and Sports.
The MoSPI or Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, has only rough estimates of the total number of specially abled individuals in India. These estimates vary across sources and a new World Bank Report on disabled persons in India, has observed that there is growing evidence that people with disabilities, comprise between 5 and 8 per cent of the Indian population (around 55 – 90 million individuals). This is a significant number and there is need for considering how the profile of disability can be raised at policy making levels.
The Census 2011 showed that, 8.3% (207.8 lakhs) of the total households in
India, are having disabled persons, of which 71% are in rural areas.
Rural areas have almost no organized sports infrastructure or sports policy in
place for disabled individuals, with severe impact on rural economy.
The benefits of incorporating sports for disabled, in Indian culture and schools, at multiple societal levels, can have significant economic benefit for the country.
