India has had a tradition of sporting festivals. These are often cultural festivals that also coincide with important events in the agricultural cycle of rural India in different states. Some of these sporting festivals in India have spiritual, religious and cultural origins.
India offers a range of Adventure Sports due to the diversity of terrain found in different parts of the states of India.
Some of these Adventure Sports include the following - Para Gliding, Sky Diving, River Rafting, Scuba Diving, Trekking.
In the festival of Makar Sankranti during the winter month of Gujarat, an International Kite Flying Festival is held annually. This also marks the Uttarayan or the journey back of the Sun to the northern hemispheres. A bewildering variety of kites of many shapes, sizes take to the Gujarat skies and this itself is a sport for many Indians demanding deft skills in kite flying. This is most spectacularly visible from the Sabarmati River Front in Ahmedabad. The Indian International Kite Festival now attracts avid kite flyers and rivalries from around the world.
Some countries from where participants arrive in Gujarat every year for the IKF, include China, Japan, Indonesia, USA and of course amateur & expert kite flyers from other states of India.
The state of Kerala hosts annual boat races in the backwaters and sea shores of Kerala. Among the popular festivals for Boat Race in India are the Champakulam Boat Race.
The Champakulam Boat Race of Kerala is held at Pampa River in Champakulam. This festival celebrates the camaraderie of boatsmen and oarsmen and the human bonds built through the sport of rowing.
In North India at Shri Anandpur Sahib, Hola Mohalla is celebrated during the Festival of Colours in India. It also marks the weather transition from winter to the famous Indian summer.
A place called Thangadh, about 75km from the Gujarat city of Rajkot celebrates the festival of Tarnetar Fair or Mela. This may have historical origins in the many stories of the Indian epic of Mahabharata, and commemorates the act of asking the hand of woman for marriage.
This sports festival is unofficially the Rural Olympics of India.

But a medal would be nice if one competes on the biggest stage for India.
A medal is also a reflection and validation that a nation has the necessary processes, infrastructure, systems and talent in place to aim for the best, at the important stages on which sports is played. And of course, the fans are happy.
